A big well done to our STEM Club members who travelled to Ballyroan N.S. on February 5th to participate in our first VEX IQ Robotics Regional Final. We are extremely proud of the team for representing our school so well.
Our Lady’s Meadow STEM Club was set up after receiving a robotics kit from Seanie Morris, STEM Engagement Officer from Laois County Council. During his visit, Seanie demonstrated how to build and code a robot using the kit and told us about an upcoming competition in February. Excited by the challenge, a group of enthusiastic pupils got to work.
With only four weeks to prepare, our team of 18 pupils from 5th and 6th Class dedicated themselves to the monumental task of building, programming, and learning to drive their robot, “Rick Rock the Robot.” Throughout the process, they developed valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and coding.
The VEX IQ Rapid Relay Competition challenges students to design and build a robot that can compete in a game-based engineering challenge. Despite the time constraints, our team embraced the experience and performed brilliantly on the day.
Since the competition, the pupils have been busy refining their robot’s programming and structure to improve its speed and agility. They are now preparing for the upcoming Laois Robotics competition, set to take place in March/April (date and venue to be confirmed).
We look forward to seeing how “Rick Rock the Robot” evolves—well done to everyone involved!
