We have been busy in Our Lady’s Meadow and have been making the best of the fine weather.

4th and 5th classes helped Senior Infants plant out the sunflowers they helped them sow before the Easter Holidays and now we are waiting to see their progress!

4th and 5th classes have also went on walks and field trips, linking both SESE and PE together along with some fun! You can read about one of our walks from Ellidh in 4th class below. One of the fieldtrips took place in Abbeyleix Bog and the children were able to investigate the different habitats, wildlife and plants that thrive near bogs. They even got to hear a cuckoo! A massive thanks to our guides on the day!

5th class want to say a special thank you to Martin Lawlor who again is on hand to help with all things gardening. Last week Martin helped them plant out some peas and beans they had grown from seed. Martin also gave them vegetables to grow that should be ready in time for the Summer Holidays including beetroot, cabbage and lettuce! 5th class are in charge of watering the garden every day and have a rota to keep them on track.

Martin was also able to speak with the children about propagation and germination and showed them exactly how these processes work.

Knockatrina House Field Trip

On May 15th we went on a fieldtrip to Knockatrina Woods with local Nature expert Susan Lawlor. It took us about 25 minutes to walk to Knockatrina gates.

On the way up the drive, we saw so many horses and foals. There was also a cute dog called Sandy.

When we got to the woods we saw a carpet of bluebells and wild garlic. They were stunning and the smell was really strong. We ate our lunch in the middle of all the flowers.

After that we made our way back to Knockatrina House, which was built in 1751 by Lord Ashbrook. The people who now own the house are Canice and Lena Farrell and they very kindly let us go into their house. The house was full of really interesting, old antiques.

I loved my trip to Knockatrina House. Thanks so much to Susan, Lena and the two Canices for the wonderful day out!
